Abstract
In recent decades, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been recognized as one of the most effective transformative technologies in various industries, including the media industry. The media, due to its information-driven nature, has a high capacity to utilize AI. In this article, while examining the various applications of AI in the media, the reasons for the relative neglect of this area in Iran will be analyzed and solutions to improve the situation will be presented.
- Introduction
Media is the main tool for shaping public opinion, transmitting information, and creating culture. With the emergence of new technologies, traditional and digital media have been forced to adapt to technological developments. In the meantime, AI has played a fundamental role with its ability to analyze big data, personalize content, and optimize media performance. However, in Iran, despite its high potential, the use of this technology in the media industry is still in its infancy.
- Applications of AI in the Media Industry
2.1. Automated Content Generation
Using language models such as GPT, media outlets can automatically generate news, articles, reports, and even scripts. This technology is widely used, especially in news agencies, to produce quick reports.
2.2. Content Personalization
Machine learning algorithms can recommend content tailored to each audience’s needs by analyzing user behavior, interests, and consumption patterns. This approach increases audience engagement and loyalty.
2.3. Sentiment Analysis
Natural language processing (NLP) tools can analyze the audience’s overall perception of an event, brand, or program by examining user comments on social networks or websites. This data is crucial for media policymaking.
2.4. Fake News Detection
With the development of machine learning tools, fake or distorted news can be identified and prevented from being published. These tools have significant performance by analyzing the source, writing style, and data verification.
2.5. Smart Video Editing and Editing
Machine vision algorithms, using deep learning, provide the ability to recognize scenes, faces, sounds, and adjust lighting and color in automatic content editing. These tools have been used in platforms such as Adobe Premiere and Runway.
2.6. AI Journalism
AI-powered robots are able to collect events from various sources, analyze them, and produce standard news outputs. Some of the world’s most reputable news agencies, such as the Washington Post and Reuters, use these systems.
- Reasons for ignoring the use of artificial intelligence in the media in Iran
3.1. Weak technical and data infrastructure
Media in Iran has limited access to structured data, advanced processing infrastructure, and analytical platforms. These shortcomings have made the development of AI projects costly and difficult.
3.2. Lack of specialized manpower
The shortage of skilled manpower in the field of artificial intelligence and data analysis is one of the country’s fundamental problems. Graduates of these fields are also more attracted to international markets or non-media fields.
3.3. Traditional view of media
In many Iranian media organizations, there is still a traditional view and resistance to technological change. This makes decision-makers reluctant to invest in AI.
3.4. Lack of legal and economic support
The lack of specific rules on the use of AI in content production and distribution and the lack of financial support for innovative media projects are serious obstacles to the development of this technology.
3.5. Concerns about content control
In countries with a high focus on media content control, technologies that accelerate and automate publication are faced with greater skepticism, as they may get out of control.
- Suggested solutions for the development of AI in Iranian media
4.1. Strengthening cooperation between universities and the media industry
The establishment of joint research institutes between universities and media organizations for the practical development of AI projects can play an effective role in promoting technology.
4.2. Investing in data and processing infrastructure
Creating native platforms for storing, analyzing, and processing media data and supporting startups active in this field is an inevitable necessity.
4.3. Training and Empowerment of Human Resources
Organizing specialized courses for journalists, media managers, and cultural activists with the aim of familiarizing them with the applications of AI should be on the agenda of educational institutions.
4.4. Formulating Smart and Facilitative Regulations
Proper policymaking and formulating efficient laws that both ensure content security and safety and do not block the path to innovation will be a key step for the development of AI in the media.
4.5. Establishing Media Innovation Centers
Establishing innovation centers (Media Innovation Labs) focusing on AI can act as an accelerator of media transformation and strengthen the link between technology, content, and audience.
Conclusion
Artificial intelligence will fundamentally transform the future of media. However, in Iran, this capacity has not yet been fully realized and requires national determination, targeted investment, and smart policymaking. If effective measures are taken in this regard, Iranian media can consolidate their position in the digital age and even become a leader at the regional level.
